How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins and they have different functions however the best way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a massive reduction in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were drenched in gazoline, the fourth one was dry. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine without sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in, but more info still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, click here as i believe that i've eliminated everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing etc. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shutdown.

A damaged G28 sensor could result replacement key for audi a3 in an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire in the gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is going bad and needs replacing. The good thing is that they are very affordable and easily accessible particularly when you're looking at an Bosch sensor, which is what we have. Alternatively, the GM version of this unit is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of many problems in your vehicle. It's a vital component of your Audi's transmission, as it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is rotating. If this sensor fails, it can cause problems for the transmission as well as the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU is then able to process the signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 click here tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should see around 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins.
